Magic with the Legend

The jazz legend Hugh Masekela is bringing his live music magic to the Lyrical Theatre at Gold Reef City Casino. Masekela is known for charisma and his legendary mix of jazz bebop, funk and afrobeat.

By the early 1970s, Masekela had attained international fame, selling out at major festivals in America. Heeding the call of his African roots, he moved to Guinea, then Liberia and Ghana, after recording the historical “Home is Where Music Is” with Dudu Pukwana. After a tour and two duet albums with Herb Alpert, Masekela and Miriam Makeba played at a Christmas Day concert in Lesotho in 1980, where 75000 people were in attendance. In 1981, Masekela moved to Botswana where he started the Botswana International School of Music with Dr. Khabi Mngoma. His record label, Jive Records, helped him to set up a mobile studio in Gaborone from which came the hit single Don’t Go Lose It Baby.

In 1985, he unexpectedly had to leave for England after the South African Defence Force killed his friend George Phahle, his wife Lindi Phahle and 14 other people suspected of being “terrorists.” Over the years he won numerous awards, made countless records and established himself as a towering in South African music.

Kasseem Daoud Dean was born to a African American Muslim father and a Puerto Rican Christian mother on August 30th, 1978. Dean didn't see much of his father, a postal worker, due to his parents being separated, and was raised by his mother. He was born and raised in the southwestern area of the New York City borough of The Bronx. It was there where he spent most of his childhood, first encountered Hip hop and began deejaying. He began deejaying after he got some equipment from his stepfather and his uncles. He later relocated to Atlanta as a teenager due to having too many fights at Harry S. Truman High School; there he started to work for his uncles, Joaquin and Darrin Dean, who were co-CEOs of the Ruff Ryders label. Forgoing the practice of using samples, he used real instruments whenever possible and tried to accentuate the performance aspect of his music. The next five years would find him landing hit after hit and becoming more in demand with each production. Swizz Beats has worked with almost everyone one in the game to date. He is one of the best beat makers for hip hop today. His club bangers have made djs happy too. Big ups to Swizz Beatz
